Volunteering Frequently Asked Questions

Does volunteering get me an early start time?
No, bib numbers are assigned at random, unless you purchased a lane bid or qualify for the elite wave. We will assign your shift based on your assigned start time/bib number. If you prefer to volunteer before or after your race, please let us know and we will try to accommodate if possible.

Can I volunteer with my friend?
Yes! Hanging out with friends (and making new ones) can be a great time while volunteering. When you sign up to volunteer, select the same shift(s) as your friend and put your friend’s name in the Comments as someone you’d like to work with. Please note that some shifts fill quickly and some shifts have stations where only one person will be. We will do our best to accommodate and place your with your buddies.

Can I pick more than one shift?
Yes. Pick your top choices. We will place you where you are most needed (one shift). If come race day, you would like to volunteer for more than one shift, then just check back in at the Volunteer Check-in Table after your first shift and we’ll assign you a new to a spot where volunteers are still needed.

I’ve never even seen a triathlon; can I still be on the bike course?
Yes. We will give you a map and instructions on how to perform your volunteer duties. No prior experience is required.

I want to volunteer, but I can’t do the whole shift. Should I still sign up?
We count on volunteers staying their whole shift. Shifts vary from 2 hours to 5 hours, from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Please pick a shift that you can cover. If scheduling conflicts come up, please let the Volunteer Director know as soon as possible, volunteer@goldnuggettriathlon.com.

Where do you need the most people?
All volunteer shifts are important, but some are harder to fill than others because they require so many volunteers. For instance, we need almost 150 lap counters, 60 people in the transition area, and 50 on the bike course. Whew!

I’ve volunteered for bib pick-up every year, but I don’t see it on the list. Can I still do it?
When shifts have filled, they no longer appear on the online volunteer form. Consider trying a new position. You may also put your preferences in the Comments field.

I signed up to volunteer at registration; do I need to sign up again here?
No, we have your information from the registration form and will assign a shift once we know your bid number.

When will I know what shift or position I’m working?
We will assemble all the requests and signups in March and April. A couple weeks before the race, we will let you know where and when we need you.

If you have any more questions, please email the Volunteer Director, volunteer@goldnuggettriathlon.com. Thank you for contributing to this great race!
