The Alaska Women’s Gold Nugget Triathlon has taken place on the third Sunday of May every year for the last 29 years. The race began as a Girls Club event to encourage fitness and sports participation for girls. The youngest participant the first year was 6 and the oldest was 60. The race began at Dimond High School, but moved to Bartlett High School in 1988. This year’s event is scheduled for May 20, 2012 at Bartlett High School. Our event is the largest triathlon in the state, and it is also the oldest women’s triathlon in the country. Over our 29 years, the race has grown from 166 participants in its first year to over 1,500 registered entrants for the 2011 race. Registration for our 2011 race filled up within a half hour! The Alaska Women’s Gold Nugget Triathlon means many things to many people. Each year we have close to 500 women and girls sign up for our race who have never done the GNT before. We also have many hundreds of participants who wouldn’t miss it for the world, year after year. Our event has touched thousands of women’s lives in this state over the 28 years that we have been staging it. Many women use our event to make enormous changes in their life and health; some of our participants have even lost 80-100 lbs. training for our event. For others it is an opportunity to complete an event with their mother, daughter, friends or colleagues. For others still it is the prime venue to compete against other top female triathletes in the state. Whatever your reasons for doing the Gold Nugget, or wanting to sign up, we thank you for your support and your participation! We invite you to check out our photos and stories from participants, learn some tips on how to improve your race, and find all the information you’ll need to both sign up for the event and to participate in it. As your Board of Directors of the Gold Nugget Triathlon, we are open to ideas and suggestions as to how we might able to enlarge our event to accommodate more women. We have been considering adding a “duathlon” event to our triathlon as a way to open it up to more people. We have heard many suggestions over the years as far as ways to streamline the registration process, which include giving preference to participants who have done the race every year for a long time. We love the fact that so many mothers, daughters, and friends have made our race a tradition for so many years! However, the mission of the Alaska Women’s Gold Nugget Triathlon is to “improve the lives of women and girls through athletics.” So we welcome and encourage newcomers too! Every year hundreds of women who are eager to discover the sport of triathlon use our event as their jumping-off point. This year we registered 435 women who are doing the Gold Nugget Triathlon for their first time ever! While we are sorry to see anyone’s consecutive streak come to a temporary end, we feel very strongly that every single participant have the same shot as any other at getting in. If you did not get an entry spot, we would love to have you stay involved this year by volunteering and cheering on our triathlon “newbies.” The GNT magic really is enhanced by our many wonderfully supportive volunteers. In addition, we encourage you to register of some of Alaska’s other great women-only events. Photographs of race available |
